How To Make Beer In Your Backyard!

It’s true!  Making beer in your backyard is super easy, and a great excuse to be outside on a beautiful day.  It’s one of my favorite things to do, and if you can afford beer brewing equipment, you too can enjoy the day and make a delicious beer.

Here is a list of equipment that can turn your backyard turn into a small brewery.

-Outdoor Propane Burner (Be sure to elevate it.  I use bricks.)

-Propane Tank

-A Half Barrel Beer Kettle OR a 7.5 gallon stainless steel turkey fryer pot.  There are plenty of large pots out there, but be sure to use stainless steel or copper.

-Fermentation Vessel; Bucket or Glass Carboy

-Thermometer

-Hydrometer

-Large Spoon

-Strainer

-Wort Chiller (One of my favorites!)

-Lighter

-Ingredients

I prefer to brew outside for several reasons.  Some people don’t like the smell, clean up is easy with a hose, and I just love being outside for whatever reason.  Brewing beer outside gives me that excuse .  However, there are some things that you need to consider when brewing outside.

-Check the weather.  Make sure its a day you know its not going to rain.

-Other people mowing there lawn.  Dust and dirt could make its way toward your brew.

-Creatures of nature.  Who knows what could fly into your wort.

-The hot sun.  Be sure to apply sunscreen.

Whether you just started homebrewing, or you’ve been brewing for awhile, but never outside, making beer in your backyard is a great way to enjoy nature.  Invite some friends, teach them a thing or two about brewing beer, and make a delicious batch of beer with the comfort of the sun. Cheers!
